Ack! This listing of the 100 best songs of the decade is taking fo-eva! In the interest of time (and to combat your waning interest), I’m smooshing together 50 through 21. The top 20 will go back to the regular format.
50. White Winter Hymnal – Fleet Foxes
I feel like the aughts was the decade of the wussy male singer. These happen to be some of the best; they have tempo!
49. Bang Theory – World Leader Pretend
“Am I not making myself clear?”
48. Run – Snow Patrol
A lethargic plea.
47. Time Is Running Out – Muse
Their first big hit, still my favorite.
46. Wishing Well – Airborne Toxic Event
“And you fell, and you fell.”
45. Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes
Jack White really blew up in the 00s, didn’t he? “I’m goin’ ta Wichita.”
44. West Coast – Coconut Records
This song reminds me of why I moved to LA in the first place…
43. Last Nite – The Strokes
The promise of a sweet decade. Didn’t really pan out, but Last Nite is still a great, grungy song.
42. Portions for Foxes – Rilo Kiley
“Baby, I’m bad news.”
41. Grace Kelly – MIKA
40. New Slang – The Shins
Beach Boys Redux. Will this band “change my life?” Not really, Garden State. Still a good song, though.
39. Myriad Harbour – New Pornographers
This song is weird, which is why I like it.
38. Can You Tell? – Ra Ra Riot
“My bed’s too big for just me.” (An ode to unrequited love.)
37. Your Ex-Lover Is Dead – Stars
How can you not love a song that starts: “When there’s nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire!” Hey, turns out this song also employs a french horn!
36. Banquet – Bloc Party
This song caused a huge fight between Joe and me (funny story), but it’s still yummy. I almost love the acoustic version of “Modern Love” better, but I went with the hit.
35. Mickey Mouse – Wavves
The first time I heard this song, I absolutely LOVED it.
34. Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
The ubiquitous summer hit.
33. Impossible – Shout Out Louds
This song never got its due; it’s so over the top that it’s perfect.
32. I Don’t Blame You – Cat Power
The smoky voice of Ms. Chan Marshall. Perfect music for a depression.
31. Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand
This album was ridic. Unfortunately, I played it out and can’t listen to it anymore. 2011, maybe?
30. Talk to Me, Dance with Me – Hot Hot Heat
Make Up the Breakdown (their major label debut) was simply amazing. Subsequent releases never lived up to the first. You’re a dance band; stop trying to be something you’re not.
29. Fuck the Pain Away – Peaches
Oh Peaches, you filthy lo-fi mullet-wearing doll.
28. Rehab – Amy Winehouse
Go to rehab. Please. Save this voice.
27. Underdog – Spoon
Sooo many good songs from Spoon this decade, but I went with the underdog.
26. Think Long – Mates of State
I’m in love with duets, I guess. This one, with its change ups, is fantastic.
25. Get Ur Freak On – Missy Elliot
Get ur freak on. Get ur freak on. Get ur get ur get ur get ur get ur freak on. Thanks, Timbaland.
24. The Scientist – Coldplay
Look, Coldplay is a good band, OK? And this song is just… pretty.
23. Such Great Heights – Postal Service
“I’m thinking it’s a sign that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images, and when we kiss they’re perfectly aligned.”
22. Float On – Modest Mouse
Oh em gee, did Modest Mouse have a fabulous decade or what? A million songs I could list here, but once again, I picked the hit.
21. Take Your Mama Out – Scissor Sisters
I could dance to this all night and never get tired of it.
