Last weekend, Joe and I drove 3.5 hours to the Salton Sea and its surrounding communities. If you want to see a real-life version of Gummo, look no further than the Imperial Valley. I simply can’t believe that these places exist in America. The Salton Sea itself is beautiful but stinky and littered with the remains of dead fish; the sand is composed of pulverized fish bones. Despite some unpleasantness, the area is totally worth a looksee; I plan to return soon and also visit Salvation Mountain.
