Straight Outta Compton is definitely not an Oscar movie. The end product is closer to a VH-1 biopic than a Walk the Line or Ray. It has a completely surface narrative, trying to tell the story of too many people from too many points of view. I found myself wishing that I was watching a documentary of NWA rather than this movie with an uneven cast and an insultingly forgiving depiction of Dr. Dre. That guy sucks.
That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the film. The story is fascinating, which is why I wish it was better than it was. And Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E shows real promise as an actor, but can Paul Giamatti retire his sleazy manager character already? Please?
Overall, the film is a fun walk down memory lane. (Remember when everyone was freaking out about gangsta rap?) Plus, boobs. B-
P.S. For the record, I’ve always given big ups to the West Si-ide. Cuz I know it’s the best side.
